EXAMS & PROCTORS
An examination proctor is responsible for supervising the exam process and returning completed exams to Engineering Outreach. You are responsible for recruiting and selecting an examination proctor who is not a personal friend, family member, work subordinate or UI student.
EO will send a proctor verification form to your proctor each semester. Your proctor will need to complete and return the verification form to EO before any exams will be shipped. After we've received the verification form, EO will send exams to proctors via priority mail. Occasionally instructors may send exams to you via e-mail or Blackboard.
Individual exams for live courses are distributed when they occur on campus, and exam packets containing all exams for pre-encoded courses are sent after the first week of the semester. EO sends e-mail notifications to your VandalMail Live address and to your proctor when the exams are sent. Exam shipping dates are also posted on the course shipping schedules.
Proctor selection and requirements
You must provide the following required proctor information before the first day of class, using the online registration form or proctor update form. (See Student Forms.)
- proctor's name (or contact person if library or testing center)
- work title and employer
- e-mail address
- mailing address
- daytime phone and fax numbers
- relationship and number of years known
An independent, non-biased proctor protects you from allegations of academic dishonesty. Your proctor must be willing to:
- administer open- or closed-book/notes, timed or take-home exams
- maintain exam files at a secure location
- provide a location to administer timed exams
- verify the student's identity by checking valid photo ID
- follow exam instructions and complete proctor certification
- retain a copy of the exam until the student receives a grade for the exam
- return exams by fax, email, or postage paid envelope to Engineering Outreach.
Proctors may include, but are not limited to:
- faculty or staff at educational institutions or UI/NIC centers (listed below)
- work supervisors or training coordinators
- U.S. military education officers
- public librarians
- human resources personnel

Proctor Certification
Engineering Outreach will hold exams until an approved proctor is selected and verified. If a proctor is deemed to be unsuitable at any time, by either EO or the instructor, EO reserves the right to either select a new proctor or require the student to select a new proctor who meets the stated requirements.
Academic Integrity
Engineering Outreach students and faculty are responsible for maintaining academic integrity as defined by UI's Student Code of Conduct. UI students should always:
- submit their own work on papers, reports, homework, and exams
- cite all materials used from other sources, such as e-publications, journal articles, newspapers and books
- refrain from sharing coursework with other students
- know the instructor's expectations for each course
Consequences for academic dishonesty may be imposed by the course instructor or the Dean of Students. Such consequences may include a grade of "F" in the course or expulsion from the university.
Click on "Academic Integrity" on the UI's Dean of Student's Website to view UI's Student Code of Conduct, instructions on how to cite sources, and more detailed information about academic integrity.
