STEPS TO DEGREE COMPLETION

  1. Determine eligibility. Refer to Admission Requirements listed with the Master's Degree Program you are interested in.
  2. Apply to the program. Apply for admission at the Graduate Admissions Web site.
  3. Appoint major professor and committee. Refer to the UI General Catalog, Part 4-Colleges and Related Units, College of Graduate Studies, Procedures for Master's Degrees, for instructions. Download the Appointment of Major Professor and/or Committee Form, and file with the College of Graduate Studies.
  4. Prepare study plan. Work with your major professor to design a plan of study. As of February 2009, study plans must be submitted online through VandalWeb. Visit Study Plan for information, and to view the tutorial.
  5. Changes to your study plan can be made on VandalWeb; changes to your committee membership can be made using a form on the College of Graduate Studies web site at Committee Changes.
  6. Access your online degree audit record to track your progress as you complete courses. Visit Degree Audit for information about how to view your record on VandalWeb under "Student Information".
  7. Prepare for completion. Download the Graduate Handbook for Theses and Dissertations. This document provides instructions relating to:
    o Final semester registration
o Filing the Application for Advanced Degree
o Specifications for theses and dissertations
    o Procedures for final defense
  8. Apply for advanced degree. Apply for graduation, and obtain related information at the UI Registrar Graduation & Commencement Web site.
  9. Participate in commencement ceremonies. Download Request to Walk through Commencement Form.
Final semester procedures
If you are a graduate student defending and/or submitting a thesis, you must be registered for thesis credit. If you are in a non-thesis program, you must be registered during the semester in which the non-thesis requirements are completed. Comprehensive exams may be due prior to the Engineering Outreach course completion deadline. If you were registered during a term and did not complete all requirements by the end of that term, but do so before the official opening date of the new term, the degree will be awarded at the end of the following term without further registration. See "Apply for advanced degree" above.
